Somnary

Free dream journal

Write it down before it fades.

Somnary is a private dream journal you can open in your browser the moment you wake: write the dream, tag it, rate how vivid and how lucid it was, and read what its symbols might reflect. Nothing is uploaded. There is no account and no server that could lose a dream.

Somnary dream vault: a list of dreams by night with tags, mood and lucidity

Why another dream journal

Built around the three ways dream journals get lost

People who keep a dream journal for years tend to lose it the same three ways. Somnary is designed so none of them can happen.

I switched phones and six years of dreams were gone.

Somnary keeps the journal on your device and gives you an encrypted export you can keep anywhere and import on any phone or browser. There is no server to lose it.

The reading was behind a paywall, and it was the same for everyone.

The Decoder reading is free, shown in full on every entry, and comes from your own journal: it tells you how often you have dreamt each symbol, not what a generic AI thinks.

I don't want my dreams on anyone's cloud.

No account, no analytics, no network path for dream data at all. On the web, everything stays in the browser you use.

What the journal keeps

Every dream, the way you remember it

Dream vault

By the night you dreamt it

Title, the dream, the night and an optional time, mood on waking, sleep quality, vividness, lucidity from 0 to 4, a nightmare flag, your own tags. A backfilled dream files under its own date.

Search and tags

Find it again

Search every title, dream and tag; filter by your own tags with a tap. The dreamer's words, not a fixed list.

Dream decoder

A reading you can see through

A curated offline library spots the symbols in what you wrote and shows a short reflection for each, with how often you have dreamt it. Deterministic, on your device, never called an interpretation.

Recurring symbols

What keeps coming back

Dream count, night streak, lucid rate, and the symbols that recur across your journal, free. The deeper symbol-by-mood reading is part of Somnary+.

Lucid dreaming

Reality checks that keep coming

On the phone, reality-check cues spread across your waking hours, repeating every day, so the habit that triggers lucidity is still there in month three.

Encrypted export

Yours to keep

A passphrase-encrypted .somnary bundle you can store anywhere and import on any phone or browser. Free, always.

Dream symbol dictionary

Dreaming about…

Thirty of the symbols that turn up most in dream journals, each with what it tends to reflect, the questions worth asking, and how Somnary spots it in your own entries. Reflections, not verdicts.

The whole dictionary · The same library runs the Decoder in the app and the web edition.

In your browser

A dream journal with nothing to install

The free Somnary, in any current browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Everything stays in that browser.

  1. Open the journal and writeNo sign-up. Title, the dream, the night, mood, vividness, lucidity, tags.
  2. Read the symbolsThe Decoder reading appears under the entry with your own counts for each symbol.
  3. Export now and thenAn encrypted .somnary bundle from Settings. Import it on the phone app, or in another browser, with the same passphrase.

Each browser keeps its own journal. To move dreams between your phone and a browser, point a camera at a moving code on the other screen (Settings, Send to your phone or Receive from your phone): nothing is uploaded. Reality-check reminders and the privacy lock are on the phone.

Somnary Dream Decoder: symbols found in a dream with a reflection and your count for each

For your eyes only

No network path for a dream

Somnary has no account, no analytics inside the app, and no cloud. Dream data never leaves the device it was written on unless you export it yourself, encrypted, with a passphrase you choose, or show it to your other screen's camera as a moving code. Nothing is uploaded either way.

The web edition keeps the journal in your browser's own storage. Clearing the site's data clears the journal, which is why export is one tap away and never paywalled. The one network call the web edition makes for you: if your phone sends Somnary+ across, this browser asks our server whether it is active, sending only the app's anonymous purchase id, never a dream. Privacy policy.

No account

No email, no password, nothing to recover.

No upload

Dreams are written and read on your device.

Encrypted bundle

Salted, key-stretched, integrity-checked export.

Not an AI

The Decoder is a curated library, deterministic, on-device.

Somnary Reality-Check Trainer: cues spread across waking hours for lucid dreaming

Keep it on your phone

The browser keeps the journal. The phone catches the dream.

The moment you wake is on the nightstand, and lucid-dream training lives in the daytime reminders. Both are the phone's job.

  • Draft autosave on every keystroke, so a half-written dream survives anything
  • Reality-check reminders spread across your waking hours, every day
  • Privacy lock on the vault
  • Nightmare Rescript with Somnary+: a gentle way to rewrite how a bad dream ends
  • Encrypted export and import, phone to browser and back
  • Dark Midnight palette, free

Somnary+ adds the deep symbol-by-mood reading, guided MILD, WBTB and WILD programs, Nightmare Rescript and the Moonlit, Ember and Seafoam palettes, as a subscription or a one-time purchase at the store's price.

Questions

Before the first entry

Is Somnary on the web really free?

Yes. The web edition is the free Somnary: unlimited dreams, tags, search, mood, vividness and lucidity, the full Decoder reading on every entry, your recurring symbols and core stats, encrypted export and import. There is nothing to buy in the browser.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up, email or password. Open the page and write.

Where are my dreams kept?

In the browser you use, on that device. Nothing you write is sent to us or anyone else; there is no server that could lose a dream or read one. If you clear the browser's site data the journal goes with it, so export a backup now and then.

Can I move my web journal to the phone app?

Yes. Export an encrypted .somnary bundle from the web edition with a passphrase, then import it in the Somnary app on your phone, or the other way round. The same file works in both.

What is the Dream Decoder?

A curated offline library of dream symbols. It finds the symbols in what you wrote, water, teeth, flying, being chased, a house, and shows a short creative reflection for each, with how often you have dreamt it. It is deterministic and runs on your device; it is not an AI and it never claims to know what a dream means.

Does it interpret my dreams?

It reflects, it does not pronounce. Each symbol comes with a few open questions and the pattern in your own journal. Somnary is a journal and a creative mirror, not therapy and not medical advice.

What does the phone app add?

Reality-check reminders that repeat every day for lucid-dream training, a privacy lock on the vault, and draft autosave the moment you wake. Somnary+ on the phone adds the deep symbol-by-mood reading, guided MILD, WBTB and WILD programs, Nightmare Rescript and extra palettes; send your phone's journal to the web and the reading, the programs and the palettes open here too.

Can I bring a journal from another app?

Yes, here and on the phone: in Settings, paste a CSV, text or JSON export from another dream journal and Somnary recognises the kind of file and maps the columns it can; unknown columns are kept in the dream's text, never dropped. Nothing is uploaded.

Is this medical or psychological advice?

No. Somnary reflects symbols and patterns creatively. It does not diagnose or treat nightmares, insomnia or any sleep condition. If dreams are troubling you, talk to a qualified professional.

Your dreams, kept safe.

Open the journal in your browser now, or put Somnary on the phone that sleeps next to you.
